Physical Changes for Boys

During puberty there are a lot of changes happen for men and I want to tell you about those changes. First, I want to tell you that changes start with hormones. A hormone is like an invisible chemical that moves through your body and sends signals to different parts of your body to begin changing. They might say "Hey, time to get taller," "Ooh, time to get hair under your armpits." The big hormone for boys is called testosterone. Now, I'll let you in on a secret: girls have testosterone, too, but guys have more of it. And testosterone is responsible for most of the changes that happen in men's bodies during puberty. One of the things that testosterone does is it makes muscles grow. So, because muscles are growing, boys might notice that their shoulders are getting broader and that they have definition in places that they didn't have before. Another thing that happens during puberty is hair starts growing around the penis and the testes. Now, the testes are the two round parts between a boy's legs. What do you call that hair? Yea, pubic hair. That's caused by testosterone, too. Another thing that happens is the penis and the testes start to grow larger. And because the penis and the testes start to grow larger, sometimes boys start to wear a jock strap or a cup which is kind of like protective underwear that holds the penis and the testes closer to the body to protect them. You might have seen this on professional football players, where they have a hard outer part over their parts to protect their most sensitive areas. Another thing that happens during puberty is the testes start to produce sperm. Before puberty, there are no sperm in male's bodies. In fact, the testes start to produce 4,000 sperm per second. 4,000, 4,000, 4,000. That's quite a lot. And once boys start to produce sperm, that means their bodies are capable of causing a pregnancy because it takes a sperm and an egg to cause a pregnancy. Males have sperm. Sometimes, sperm decides to leave the body at night. That's called a wet dream. It's sort of like the body practicing letting sperm out of the body. So, that means a boy might wake up in the middle of the night with white, stick wetness in their underwear or their bed sheets. It's nothing to be worried about. You haven't wet the bed. It just means you have already started to produce sperm and it's come out during the night. Another thing that happens during puberty is boys notice that they are having more erections. An erection is when a lot of blood rushes into the genitals and for boys, it means the penis gets hard and sticks out. That's what has to happen before sperm can leave the body. And this can happen more often during puberty. Also, something that's caused by hormones.
