Q and A - Breasts

"What if one breast grows larger than the other one?" Well, that's perfectly normal. Usually we are not symmetrical on both sides of our bodies. If we look at our hands, they are not exactly the same. So, in women one breast is usually different from the other. For most people, its not very noticeable, but it is perfectly normal. It is also normal for one breast to start growing before the other one. So, in puberty, people might notice that, as well. "Is there a spot on the breast that hurts more than the other ones?" Well, I'm not sure what this person is asking, but they could be asking about the nipple. That's the part in the center of the breast that's usually the most sensitive part of the breast. If they are talking about another part of the breast that hurts, they might want to go to a doctor and get it checked out, but it is normal, especially during puberty to be a little more sensitive. "How big do the breasts grow?" Well, everybody is going to be different. Some breasts grow a lot and some grow a little. Sometimes you can predict how big they are going to get, if you know the members of your family or the people who gave birth to you, but not always. "How do you get breast cancer?" Well, we don't know all of the reasons breast cancer happens. We think it has something to do with hereditary reasons, like having to do with getting it from family members or maybe there are things in the environment. But we do not honestly know what causes breast cancer or the cells in the breast to start to divide. The most important thing to know about breast cancer is how to do breast exams or feeling the breasts once a month to check for lumps or bumps. "If you feel your breasts for breast cancer, can you see the bumps?" No, usually people cannot see the bumps. That's why its important to feel underneath the skin and what you are looking for is like a grain of rice or a pea underneath the skin. If you notice some kind of change like that, you should go to the doctor and get that checked out. "Why do women have milk in their breasts?" Well, first of all, do women have milk in their breasts all the time? No, they only have milk in their breasts when they are pregnant and the glands that produce milk are called mammary glands. Now, during puberty, people's breasts grow to prepare to make milk, but there is no milk in the breast unless the person has a pregnancy later in life. "Could hair grow on the boobs?" By boobs, I think this person means breasts. It's a slang term. But yes, hair can grow on the boobs or around the nipples. That's pretty normal. "Can you get cancer if the breast is injured or got damaged?" Most of the time breast cancer is not caused by an injury, its usually some other cause.
