Q and A - Tampons and Pads

"What do you do if the string breaks?" I think this person is talking about tampons. Well, I can tell you these things are very, very sturdy. These strings don't break, so its nothing anyone has to worry about. Of all of the women using tampons all over the world, we have not heard of a single case of a string breaking. So, you do not have to worry. "Does it hurt to put the tampon in and are they hard to take out?" Tampons don't hurt. But to be truthful, it can be a little uncomfortable when you're first learning how to put one in. Also, its important that the tampon goes all the way to the back of the vagina, near the cervix. That's the area of the body that have very little nerve endings. If the person leaves the tampon near the opening of the vagina, it might feel a little uncomfortable. A person would know that it was all the way there because they wouldn't notice that the tampon was there. So, tampons don't hurt. And is it hard to take them out? No. That's what the string is there for. You just pull the string and it slides out. "Can tampons get stuck?' I get this question a lot. Tampons do not get stuck. That's why they have this string. Also, when tampons are inside the body, there is no way they could go up into the uterus because the cervix, the opening to the uterus, is actually very very small. So tampons don't get stuck or lost inside bodies. "If you use pads, what do you use when you shower?" Well, if a person is showering, they don't need to have a pad or a tampon on, they can just shower and when they're done washing their bodies, they can get out and choose between a tampon and a pad. Its actually okay to let the blood from a period go down the drain during a shower. "Where can you buy tampons?" Well, people can buy tampons at the local pharmacy or you can ask a trusted adult to help you get some tampons. "When is a hood time to start using tampons?" Well, that's a personal choice. Some people start using tampons as soon as they get their periods. I know one young lady, who's 12th birthday was a pool party and she invited all of her friends. On that day, she got her period. So, what did she do? She talked to her older sister and her sister told her how to use tampons. Her first day or her first period. For her that was the right choice. Some people wait longer to start using tampons. Some people feel comfortable putting their fingers inside themselves, others don't. it's a personal choice. So, when is a good time to start using tampons? Only you can answer that question.
